Sometimes, root canal treatments may fail to treat the tooth when the infection has been neglected for too long or it has reappeared. Re-root canal treatment may be undertaken when your previous root canal treatment has been unable to save your tooth from bacteria.
To minimise any discomfort during the treatment, a local anaesthetic will be administered. Your dentist will remove the filling material that was placed during the previous root canal treatment. Afterwards, your root canal will be disinfected and cleaned as a part of the treatment, and a new seal will be applied.
The treatment may take up to 2 hours, depending on the individual case.
If the treatment is unable to eliminate the damage caused by the infection, root canal surgery may be needed. Alternatively, a tooth may need to be extracted.
