Periodontics is the dental speciality that studies the structure of teeth and gums and the diseases affecting oral health. Bacteria that reside in your mouth stick to the teeth. When this builds up and irritates the gums, it can cause severe gum problems.
Periodontal treatments prevent the bacteria from harming your mouth as they focus on removing bacteria and build-up from your mouth.
During the periodontal treatment, your dentist cleans your teeth and removes the tartar (caused by bacteria) from the gum line. In cases where the bacteria have already harmed the tooth or gums, the dentist will treat the area.
Periodontal treatments may take several visits to your dentist. However, the number of appointments will depend on the patient’s individual case and how much the bacteria has spread.
