Apicectomy is a root canal surgery performed by using fine tools to remove a small portion of the tooth’s root and the infected tissues. The procedure is recommended when root canal treatments have been unable to save the tooth from infection.
Before the procedure, diagnostic images of the infected tooth’s area will be carefully examined, and any other health factors will be reviewed (such as any medications or health issues).
Apicectomy is performed under a local anaesthetic to minimise any discomfort. During the procedure, the dental surgeon makes small cuts in the gum to remove any infected tissues and pieces of the tooth’s root. As one of the final steps, the root canal is cleaned and sealed with a small filling.
The surgery times may vary from 30 to 90 minutes, depending on the individual case.
After the Apicectomy, patients will receive instructions for aftercare. Swelling and soreness around the treated area may occur, but it is safe to use over-the-counter pain relief.
You may return to your daily activities, but it is advised to avoid eating hard-to-chew foods immediately after treatment.
